Retrieving her bag from Rotherford’s office, Gene was peremptorily informed that a welcome party had been scheduled in the East dining room, and word was spreading that she’d come to fix everything.

“Everything, General,” Gene said. “Come on.”

“I didn’t start that rumour,” Rotherford said in the same tone. “What I been telling people is closer to the truth. That you came down to assess and evaluate. And after you make your report, we’ll get the men and the firepower. It’s your word they need, that’s all. They won’t believe us. They think we’re cracked, you know. Pelagic fever or brain bubbles or whathaveyou. They won’t listen.”

Gene looked away, ashamed. There was a gleam in the old man’s eye that she had initially thought could be, yes, some kind of chemical imbalance. They all had a little of it—Janz, Wong, Ruiz, even the young soldiers at the dock. But whatever Rotherford had was so pronounced it reminded her of Victorian descriptions of a laudanum high, his pupils wide, lit from the inside. Had that been there in her mother’s photos from the old days? “East wing,” she said eventually. “I’ll be there. I won’t have to give a speech, will I?”

“No promises,” he chuckled.

“I’m going to take my sub out,” she said. “I’ve got hours to kill. Maybe I’ll see... clues, evidence, something.”

“Sure. What’s that seat, three?” he said; she blinked, taken aback by his agreement. “Take Ruiz and one more scientist. And tether up.”
